The Alpaca is our smallest whitewater /
multi-purpose
expedition boat, great for smaller paddlers lookin
g for a raft capable of carrying large packs, negotiating difficult rivers, or doing substantial water crossings.

The Alpaca is the smallest and lightest “full size” boat, with 12” (30cm) side tubes.

The Alpaca is generally preferred by boaters 5’8″ in height or shorter.

The Alpaca is 3″ (11 cm) shorter than the Yak, and 8″ (23cm) shorter than the Llama.

Yukon Yak/ユーコンヤック

YakRedxYakBlue

The Yukon Yak is our mid-size whitewater / multi-purpose expedition boat.  The Yak is Yukon Yak is a good high-performance fit for mid size paddlers, and lets smaller paddlers carry larger loads.  Our most popular boat due to its versatile size.

The Yukon Yak is generally preferred by boaters who range between 5’8” (1.73m) and 6’(1.83m) tall.

The Yukon Yak is 3” (11cm) longer than the Alpaca and 5”(12.7cm) shorter than the Denali Llama.

Denali Llama/デナリリャマ

LlamaRedLlamaBlue

The Denali Llama is our large whitewater / multi-purpose expedition boat, allowing for larger packs and longer legs.

The Llama has plenty of flotation for two people on a short crossing, as long as you don’t mind getting cozy. For this reason, we recommend the open Llama as an option for couples or small groups who want to do calm river fording or limited flat-water crossings.  A single paddler can ferry all the packs and travelers, one passenger at a time. This technique allows groups to safely cross water obstacles with minimal shared equipment.

The Denali Llama is generally preferred by boaters taller than 6 feet (1.88 meters).

The Denali Llama is 8”(23cm) longer than the Alpaca and 5”(12.7cm) longer than the Yukon Yak.

You may add up to 4” to the overall length with a custom order.

Mule/ミュール     New for 2015!

MuleYellowMuleRetroCamo

Introducing the Mule, our new XL whitewater/multi-purpose expedition boat.

The Mule, like the name suggests, can carry some weight! The Mule is Longer than the Llama, with a wider bow with less rocker (bow upturn).  The Mule is ideal for larger folks and those who want more cargo room and stability, while maintaining maneuverability.  Ideal for hunting, fishing, and whitewater alike!

Generally preferred by large and tall boaters who need more leg and foot room than the Llama provides,  or those who want more room and stability for packs, dogs, and small kids.  Available with both Cruiser and Whitewater Spray-decks, as well as the Cargo-Fly System.

Ultralight Boats/ウルトラライトボート

Scout/スカウト

ScoutBlackScoutMulti1

The elemental packraft, the kind of boat that fits with your gear in a messenger bag, the Scout is an extremely durable packraft designed for long-distance trekking, mellow river crossings, canyoneering, spelunking, lake fishing, and lightweight travel.

Built to the same durability specs as our main boats, though with a lighter weight floor.  The Scout is designed for you if you need a tough, light, simple, and reliable boat but don’t need the whitewater performance and expeditionary features of our main-line boats.

The Scout has smaller 10”(25.4cm) side tubes than our main-line packrafts, with an enlarged stern for added comfort and handling.  Smaller tubes make the Scout a bit less stable, but even the big boys have no problem with this boat in calm water (though they may prefer the CuriYak).

The Scout is a great beginner packraft for small children.

Stripped down to save weight, the Scout has one standard tiedown, but you can add extra ones.

13”(33cm) shorter than the CuriYak.

Does not come with a seat.

CuriYak/キュリヤック

In response to those who wanted another lightweight packraft for easy travel but who were too big or gear-intensive for the Scout, we offer the CuriYak.  Used for everthing from high lake fishing to bike-rafting, the CuriYak is an incredibly fun and versatile boat.

The CuriYak is most similar in size to the Yukon Yak, though it is narrower in outside width yet has a wider inside width due to the smaller 10”(25.4cm) side tubes.  It comes with a lightweight floor and enlarged bow and stern.

Great beginner raft for small to mid size children.

13”(33cm) longer than the Scout, with enlarged bow for added cargo capacity.

Stripped down to save weight, the CuriYak has one standard tiedown, but you can add extra ones.

Does not come with a seat.

Ghost/ゴースト      New for 2015!

GhostBlack

GhostRolledShaped like the Scout, paddles like a Scout,  but only 1.5 lb!  Made with an
incredibly ultra light urethane fabric, the Ghost is in a class of it’s own.  Keep one in your fishing vest just in case.  Intended for delicate use on calm waters only!  Unlike similar ultralight craft, this tiny Ghost of a boat actually paddles like a packraft!

The Ghost is built to the same standard as our other rafts, however it uses an incredibly light fabric that can puncture or tear with improper handling.  You’ll want to protect your raft from sharp objects on your person as well as in the water.  Watch out for that fish hook!  High end fabrics are pricey.  As with most ultralight gear, lighter unfortunately doesn’t mean cheaper!

One standard tiedown.  Does not come with a seat.  Cargo Fly and Spray Deck not available.

Longer Boats and Row-able Boats/長さのあるボート&ローボート化可能なボート

Fjord Explorer/フィヨルド エクスプローラー    New Design for 2015!

FjordExplorerCedarFjord-ExplorerRetroCamoFjordExplorerDigiCamo

Our fastest single person raft!

The Fjord Explorer can be paddled with a kayak paddle or rowed with our packable RowFrame and oars (sold separately).  With a long symmetrical hull for added speed and flotation, it’s great for fishing, flat-water rowing, and as a small roll-away sailboat tender.

The Fjord Explorer RowFrame is a 2.4lb oar-frame kit with special-built 16 oz. oars.  Both can be disassembled for packing, and the oars can be reconfigured to form a feathered kayak paddle, or two short, canoe-style paddles.  An attachable skeg improves open-water tracking and a removable elevated seat improves rowing comfort and ergonomics.  The Explorer is easy to row and allows you to maintain speed efficiently, making it easy to cover distance.  The RowFrame comes with an elevated seat that rests on top of the existing seat which allowing variation in  seat height for comfort while rowing.  The oar-frame and oars are not intended for whitewater.  Kit sold separately from raft.

The oar-frame can NOT be used with either spray-deck, however it will work with a Cruiser decked boat with the deck temporarily removed.

When paddled kayak style, the Fjord Explorer is a fast and roomy craft with the most cargo capacity of our single-person boats.  Due to the extended bow, the Fjord Explorer is a bit less maneuverable than the rest of our all-purpose line, but still whitewater worthy!  Available with both Cruiser and Whitewater Spray-decks, as well as the Cargo Fly system.

Explorer 42/エクスプローラー42

FX42RedFX42Cedar
The Explorer 42 is a longer raft intended for two paddlers, or single paddlers wanting a huge amount of room for gear.  The length of this boat makes it fast on open water, yet capable of class III whitewater.  Lighter overall than two standard packrafts and faster, the FX42 makes a good option for pairs on long expeditions, especially when combined with our Shred-gnar paddle that converts from a kayak paddle into two canoe paddles.  The FX42 is a great option for bringing the kids or dogs.

The FX 42 can NOT be fitted with any of the spray decks due to the configuration for two paddlers.

Available with the Cargo-Fly system

Double Duck/ダブルダック

DoubleDuckRed

DoubleDuckCedarBuilt for two-person use on calm waters, the Double Duck is a lightweight and stable barge of a packraft.  It is wider than our other boats, except for the Gnu.  The Double Duck has a flat bow, giving it a long and fast waterline, and maximizes the internal floor space. Because the Double Duck is designed for calm water use, and to keep down the overall weight, we use the same lightweight floor as we use on the Scout.

Comes with standard attachments for one seat in the rear, as well as another loose seat for a passenger.  This extra seat can also be used to double the height of the rear seat.

This boat has been popular for aquatic research because of its lightweight simplicity and roomy interior.

We do not recommend this boat for whitewater use.  The long tubes and flat bow make it susceptible to buckling and wrapping on rocks.

The Alpaca Gnu/アルパカヌー

GnuDigiCamo

GnuDeckRemovedGnuDeckedOne of our most versatile craft!  The Alpacka Gnu is the first and only canoe-style packraft.  Designed for two, our longest and widest packraft, The Gnu is incredibly fast with a hull speed almost double the regular boats. This versatile boat is great for long expeditions, hunting, adventure racing, flat-water cruising, and can comfortably ferry three people across flat-water.  The Gnu handles great in whitewater and is available with a two person removable Spray-deck.

The Gnu is a fabulous fishing craft for two people.  The person in the bow kneels and casts, while the person in the rear sits on the stern, using a kayak paddle or optional oar-frame to navigate.  Just like a drift boat, they can sneak into all kinds of holes along the riverbank.

With a long inflatable saddle, the Gnu is designed primarily for two people kneeling, using canoe paddles.  It can also be paddled solo with a kayak paddle, or rowed with an optional oar-frame.  The inflatable saddle can be rolled up to create a single seat for paddling in seated position.

The boat comes standard with a cargo fly in the center inflatable saddle.  This is a great storage space for day gear.  For people wanting to use the Gnu for longer trips, adding a cargo fly option to the boat itself opens up a tremendous amount of interior storage space.

If kneeling and running rapids or paddling amongst rocks, we would strongly recommend knee pads or some kind of knee protection on the bottom of the packraft!

We highly recommend our Shred-Gnar paddle that converts from a single kayak paddle into two canoe paddles with t-grips.

Alpacka Spray Decks/スプレーデッキ

Spray-decks are added at the shop, if you wo
uld like to add a deck to a used boat, please see “In-shop Repair and Retrofit” page.

Alpacka spray-decks are general-purpose and are designed not just for whitewater, but also for crossing cold bays and doing long, rainy descents of the Yukon River.  Staying lightweight is a primary element of packraft design.  Adding approximately 8 oz. to a boat, your spray deck is made of fabric as durable as a 3-season tent.

There are two decks to choose from for our single paddler boats, and one design available for the Alpacka Gnu.  There are currently no spray-decks available for the FX42 or Double Duck.

Underwater wet-exits are a skill. If you plan on taking your Alpacka Raft into whitewater, practice exiting underwater from your spray deck in a swimming pool or other safe environment first.

Your PFD type affects the spray deck. PFDs & spray decks interact. Many foam-style kayaking PFDs actually push down spray deck, letting water pool on the deck. Such PFDs are designed for kayaking, not for Alpackas. We recommend PFDs that focus their bulk high on your chest, or that have a natural constriction around the ribs.

  • Avoid lifting the boat by the deck, or it may tear
  • Check out “spray deck repair” information under our “Field and Home Repair” section for tips on caring for and fixing your deck.
  • We can attach spray decks to used open boats or replace an older deck with a newer model.  Please see “In-shop Repair and Retrofit” page.
  • Whitewater Spray Deck

The Whitewater Spray-deck is our driest deck and the best option for whitewater, or anywhere you need to keep dry.  We use nano-lite aluminum, and Pex-pipe poles to create a rigid, kayak style cockpit coaming.  Onto this coaming fits an ultra light spray-skirt that is worn underneath your PFD like a traditional spray-skirt.  This spray-deck has taken our packrafts to a new level of performance and reliability in challenging waters.  Includes two aluminum poles, two Pex-pipe poles, and an ultra light spray-skirt.

Deck is permanently attached to the boat and is not removable.  If you prefer the option of having both a spray-deck and an open boat, see the Cruiser Spray-deck.

NOT compatible with standard kayak spray-skirts, made for use with the included Alpacka brand skirt only.

For those who prefer a deeper knee bend, see our skirt with knee-pockets.

Some users prefer to sit forward of our standard seating position.  We are able to move the deck 2 inches forward without custom modification.  Please use the comments field when placing your order request this change.

To add a deck to a used boat, see our “In-shop Repair and Retrofit” page.

Cruiser Spray Deck/クルーザースプレーデッキ

AlpackaCruiserDeckx

The Cruiser Spray Deck is designed for simplicity and to keep you drier and warmer than an open boat in whitewater, wind, and rain.   The Cruiser seals along the left boat tube and up the left side of the torso with Velcro, which easily comes apart in the event of a wet-exit.  An inflatable pillow sheds water and keeps water from pooling in your lap.  This spray-deck fits on the outside of your PFD with an adjustable elastic, which does let some water in at times and why we consider this deck to be “semi-dry” . The deck can be mostly removed when not needed, leaving only the zippered outline and a small panel in the bow.  The Cruiser is a very simple and effective design, with no extra pieces or parts to keep track of.

For a drier deck, see the Whitewater Spray-Deck.

To add a deck to a used boat, see our Service page.

Gnu WW Spray-deck/ヌー ホワイトウォータースプレーデッキ

GnuDecked

Designed for use with two people kneeling using the standard center pillow(?), the Gnu Spray-Deck turns the Alpacka Gnu into a two person, whitewater worthy, “C2” style canoe.

We use a flexible Pex-pipe tube to create a round cockpit coaming, onto this fits an ultra-light spray-skirt that each paddler wears underneath their PFD.  This deck is fully removable using semi-dry YKK zippers, adding another great option to an already versatile craft!

To add a deck to a used boat, see our Service page.

Cargo Fly System/カーゴフライ システム

alpacka-193-1

alpacka-193-2
Cargo-Flys are added at the shop, if you would like to add one to a used boat, please see “In-shop Repair and Retrofit” page.  Available only on 2010 and newer models.

The Cargo Fly is an airtight, waterproof zipper system in the stern of the boat.  Opening this zipper allows access to the inside of the tubes to store your gear.  We use the Tizip Superseal zipper for the raft opening.  This zipper has a long proven track record for holding air and staying dry in multiple adverse conditions.   With careful planning, everything can now go inside your raft rather than strapped on the bow in a pack. This allows for a lower center of gravity and an unobstructed bow for improved handling, as well as increased cargo capacity. The boats handle so much better it can be hard to believe you are paddling the same raft.  The weight in the tubes makes the boat handle more like a hard-shell craft.

The Cargo Fly system is a three piece set.  The set includes the zipper in the boat and two zipper-opening inflatable dry-bags that slide inside the boat tubes.  These dry-bags are long and a slightly smaller diameter than the boat tubes themselves.  Once they are filled with gear and clipped in place, they are inflated, giving you two additional air chambers.

Special considerations are necessary when using the zipper!

Improper care of the zipper can render your packraft useless!!!

Constant vigilance to keep sand out of the zipper is important as is careful cleaning and lubrication after use.  Always keep lubrication in your repair kit and use it often, always wiping off the excess.

Care is needed not stress or scrape the zipper during loading and unloading.  The opening is limited in size, so test your gear before heading out.

Please see our “Zipper Care” page for detailed care instructions

We can retrofit this option on all boats that have the “big butt” sterns, which started with the 2010 model.  Older boats with the small stern don’t have enough room. Please see our Service page
